New gear, yet again

One of my goals for next year is to not buy any more new gear. None. I know that sounds crazy given my history, but it is a goal. I have been salivating over a big prime lens for birding, but I don’t know if I want to spend upwards of $5k for a nice f2.8 or f4 version, but that might be the only exception. I have gotten into birding and enjoy it, so never say never!

Another goal for next year is to explore macro photography more. I have the RF 100mm f2.8 macro lens already, and recently picked up a few lights to help illuminate small subjects in the forest, but what I was lacking was a tripod with a reversible center column. For that matter, none of my tripods have a center column. I’ve never liked them, so I don’t own one. Until now.

The new addition to the Casey Johnson Photography family is the Leofoto LX-254CT travel tripod with reversible center column. I opted to not get a Leofoto ball head, instead I’ll use one of the two I already own when it comes time to get out to do some macro work. The reversible center column will allow me to get low to the ground and still have tripod support, and it is light as a feather. It could turn into a true travel tripod as well. I am excited at the possibilities. Macro photos to come!
