Alum Hollow Hike

Yesterday morning, my hiking buddy, Tom, and I hit the trails for an early morning hike. After a few weeks of rain, we were in search of waterfalls and Alum Hollow on Green Mountain in South Huntsville fit the bill. The hike to the falls is rather easy, a little over a mile with very little elevation gain at all. Along the way, we found a new trail, Turtle Creek Trail, which ran along the creek. This trail was in the process of being built and was fantastic, but very steep coming out of it. Once along the creek, we found it packed full of cascades, a gorgeous site to see and hear.

I’ve recently simplified my kit by replacing the Arca Swiss plate on my tripod with one with a lever. I can secure the camera to the tripod and switch from portrait to landscape orientation in a matter of seconds. The old setup with a small knob used to secure my camera was fiddly, and when cold outside with gloves on, it was even more so. The new setup is a dream to get ready to hit the shutter button. In addition, Haida magnetic filters make the use of filters a breeze as well. This is the photo I took alongside Turtle Creek.

Once we finished there, it was back to the Alum Hollow trail. 15 minutes later, we arrived at the falls. The falls are beautiful, with many layers to focus on. We climbed down to the base of the falls and I tried a few different compositions, but never felt like any of them worked. The scene is messy and cluttered, lots of leaves, rocks, and branches, however, I captured one that I will share here. This is Alum Hollow Falls.
