New Gear
I love new gear posts! They just make me happy. Do I have a bit of Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS)? Sure, I certainly do. For those who do not know, according to Google, GAS is a colloquial term referring to the uncontrollable urge to acquire new equipment, often associated with musicians, photographers, and other creatives, despite already possessing functional tools. So yeah, that’s me.
Anyway, before introducing the new gear, some lenses will be sold over the next few weeks. And quite possibly the Sony point and shoot camera. The RF 70-200 and the RF 24-240 lenses are on the chopping block, as is my old EF 100-400. Hopefully, the sale of those items will help rebuild my savings account which has taken a beating lately.
For the longest time I have wanted to have a bigger part in the photos I print. Currently I send my photos to Mpix for printing. While I have been reasonably pleased with their service, I wanted more control of the process. After a discussion with a friend, I opted to buy a Canon Pro-310 printer. It is the perfect size, price point, and prints up to 13x19 photos which would be the largest I would want to print at home. Anything larger than that would get sent out to Mpix or possibly Bay Photo.
I unboxed it today, then bought a printer stand which should be delivered on Wednesday. Test prints shortly after that. Excited!
The next bit of gear I picked up is a RF 100-500 lens. I found one used, which helped save close to $1000 off the eye wateringly high list price of $2900. I already own the RF 100-400 lens, which I will probably keep as I think it is a sharp lens, was super cheap, and will be primarily used for travel. I haven’t much of a chance to take any photos with it, but did capture a new to the backyard bird last weekend with it. It’s going to be a great lens for me and my photography for years to come!
This photo has no denoising applied to it. Just minor tonal changes and cropped.
