Huntsville Museum of Art Exhibit
About a month ago, the local photography club sent a message to all members about an exhibit at the Huntsville Museum of Art titled The Artist Abroad. Each member of the club was able to submit 5 photos for consideration for the exhibit. In short, the Artist Abroad exhibit will explore the European locales which inspired 19th-21st century American artists to travel abroad. Great, I think I have photos made with this exhibit in mind.
The selection process was easy for me. Not that I knew immediately which photos to submit, I just didn’t have a lot of time with a 2 week trip to Kauai looming. I needed photos that required very little retouching and cropping for the club’s size requirements. Two photos from the Lake District in England made the cut, same with a photo of Whitby Abbey at sunset, and I knew a photo of Mousehole harbor in Cornwall was in as well. But that last photo was tough.
Ultimately, I decided on a photo of Dunstanburgh Castle in Northumberland County, England. I loved the location, and the day I spent there, exploring, taking photos, drinking in the history. It was a spectacular site, and from where I was taking photos, an epic view if there ever was one. However, the day I was there, it was a bluebird sky kind of day, not a lick of drama in the sky. Since I could not revisit this location again, my time was limited in the area. I had to make do with those conditions. Photos from that day never saw the light of day, until now. The sky was just too boring. So, I made an editing choice to replace the sky using Photoshop. I did not choose anything dramatic, just a nice blue sky with some puffy clouds. That photo was selected to be part of The Artist Abroad exhibit which opens May 7th.
Here are all 5 photos I submitted for consideration. Personally, I thought Mousehole or Derwentwater would have been selected, but, alas, I have never been able to decide what appeals to people. I can only take photos I enjoy, and share them. And that is why I am here.
