New Gear

Do you know what is a hot commodity these days in the camera world? Point and shoot cameras! 12 to 15 years ago, it seemed like everyone had one. They pretty much fit in a pocket or a purse, and were incredibly convenient. They were everywhere. Then, something happened, cell phone cameras got better and better, and point and shoot cameras starting going the way of the dinosaurs. Manufacturers all but quit making them, it was a dead market. Can you blame folks and the manufacturers for giving up on them? I can’t.

Around when Covid happened, some social media influencers started touting a few point and shoot cameras, and they became vital again. Yet many of the manufacturers gave up on them and quit producing so much. So what I am getting at is that most point and shoot cameras, high end, are hard to find and can cost as much if not more than retail. One camera in particular is the Sony RX100 VII. It’s already an eye-watering $1300 new, nice used versions will set you back $1000 to $1200.

I have lusted after the RX100 VII for a few years now. Articulating touch screen, popup viewfinder, small form factor, and a 24-200mm focal length is a lot to love. I tried a Lumix point and shoot last year, but it left me wanting more and just not happy with the image quality. In the past, I have tried the Sony NEX-7, an A6000, and most recently an A6400. I have loved all 3, however, they were interchangeable lens cameras and that made me want to buy lenses for them which then lead me to buy all sorts of accessories too. L-bracket, wrist strap, camera bag, and whatever else caught my eye. I needed a camera I could just take with me every day, use it and not worry about a ton of accessories, or lenses. Today, I received my RX100 VII from mpb.com and I could not be happier. Hope to have some photos to share very soon!
