Testing the EF 100-400mm lens
Last night I decided to check out the bird situation in the backyard with the R7. At the last second, I switched the trusty RF 100-400mm to the heavy and cumbersome EF 100-400mm lens. The EF version has been in my arsenal for a handful of years, but never has been used all that much. It’s just too unwieldy.
A while back, I sold it on a local photography forum only for it be returned by the buyer. Rightfully so, it had an abrasion on the lens and for the price, it needed to be at least a 9 out of 10 optically. That said, the abrasion is minor and doesn’t not affect image quality unless an aperture of f16 and smaller is used. And that’s not been tested. Anyway, I decided to hang on to the lens and use it. Honest to god, get out and use that damn thing. Along the way to that action, I bought the RF version and haven’t take the EF version out of the house since. That is until yesterday. I snapped about 600 pics in the backyard with the R7 and the EF lens of birds.
I’m not terribly impressed. It’s sharp, but not that much than the RF version. And certainly not for the weight it brings. Tonight, I did the same thing, backyard birding with the R7, this time with the RF version. Quickly glancing over the pics, I don’t see any reason why I would ever take the EF lens out, ever again. So, I believe the EF version will be sent off to mpb.com soon. Here are the best of the EF pics.
